UK second-quarter growth is revised to 0.5%

Groundline AI newsroom · Briefing · 1 minute read ·

ONS revises real GDP growth for April to June from 0.4% to 0.5%. The release also estimates real GDP per head rose 0.5%; revisions are part of the evidence, not a new quarter of activity.

Why it matters

The revision changes the best official estimate of activity in an already completed quarter. It does not mean the economy grew by an extra 0.5% after the first estimate. ONS attributes the updated national accounts to methodological changes and additional data, including VAT turnover information. The same release estimates services grew 0.6%, construction 0.8% and production fell 0.1% in the quarter.

Our analysis: revisions are a reason to preserve the data vintage and avoid treating an early estimate as final. GDP per head and real disposable income per head give different views of household conditions, and neither determines what an individual household experienced. The next evidence will include later revisions and subsequent-quarter data. This dated release provides no live market signal and does not establish the effect of later policy decisions.
